From the very beginning, teach your puppy that good things in life — food, attention, play, and freedom — come through calm, polite behavior. This simple mindset shift helps puppies develop impulse control naturally.
They quickly learn that sitting politely gets them what they want. Jumping, barking, or pushing does not.
Use Management to Stop Problems Before They Start
Management plays a huge role in prevention.
Using baby gates, crates, and leashes inside the house limits your puppy’s ability to practice unwanted behaviors. The less a puppy practices jumping on people or chewing furniture, the less likely those behaviors become habits.
Good management doesn’t restrict your puppy forever. It simply prevents rehearsal of the wrong behaviors while you teach the right ones.
Socialization That Actually Prevents Fear and Reactivity
Socialization is another critical part of prevention.
Exposing your puppy to a wide variety of people, places, sounds, and surfaces in a positive way helps prevent fear and reactivity later in life. However, this must be done thoughtfully.
