Welcome to the K9 Advantage Blog: Real Training for Real Dogs

Hi, I’m Roy Hayes with K9 Advantage Dog Training. I’ve been working with dogs for over 40 years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: most dogs don’t need more complicated methods. They need clear leadership, consistent structure, and owners who understand how to set them up for success.

That’s what this blog is about.

I’ve spent decades training puppies, adult dogs, reactive dogs, and everything in between across Kingman, Lake Havasu, Bullhead City, and the surrounding areas. I’ve worked with family pets, shelter dogs, and dogs with serious behavior challenges. Through all of it, one truth has stayed the same: when owners learn to lead calmly and manage their dog’s environment properly, real change happens.

I don’t believe in quick fixes or harsh tools. My approach is built on what I call “Learn to Earn” — teaching dogs that good things in life come through calm, respectful behavior. It’s about structure, timing, and helping dogs understand what we actually want from them. It’s practical, it works in the real world, and it builds a relationship you can trust.

Over the years, I’ve seen the same struggles show up again and again: dogs that pull on leash, bark at everything, struggle with thresholds, or react to other dogs. Most of the time, these issues aren’t about the dog being “bad.” They’re about missing structure and unclear communication. That’s why I focus so heavily on management and impulse control — because when those pieces are in place, training becomes much easier.

This blog is my way of sharing what I’ve learned in a straightforward way. You’ll find practical tips you can actually use, honest discussions about common behavior issues, and real examples from the dogs I work with every day (including my own Labrador, Willow, and Yorkie, Ellie Mae). I’ll also talk about what it really takes to create lasting change at home.

Whether you’re dealing with a new puppy, a reactive dog, or you just want better manners around the house, I hope you’ll find something here that helps. If you’re starting with a young dog, read The Power of Prevention in Puppy Training for practical guidance.

If you’re local and want hands-on help, I offer Private In-Home Sessions, Drop-In Classes, and support for serious behavior problems. You can also explore our full dog training services or learn more about K9 Advantage.

Thanks for being here. I’m looking forward to sharing more with you.
